Plot 61a - Tim & Adrienn

Adrienn is from Hungary

Plot Holder from Around The World - Hungary

Tim & adrienn moved to Wellesbourne in 2019 & got plot 61a a year later. They enjoy good food & cooking.

‘an allotment is a perfect way to make sure we get fresh tasty vegetables for our table.

it also gives us the space & flexibility to grow varieties that we can’t buy in the supermarket. We also enjoy the added exercise we get from working the plot & we regularly bring our young son to the allotments for some fresh air and outdoor stimulation.

We often eat traditional Hungarian food. Believe it or not, there is much more to Hungarian food than gulasz ( Goulash)  - including one of Adrienne’s favourites “TŐKFŐZELÉK”, which is a cooked Hungarian squash.

This particular squash isn’t available outside of Hungary, & it doesn’t travel well, so we grow as many tök as we can, & freeze them so she can enjoy a special taste of home throughout the year.

‘There is no concept of an allotment in Hungary. Most people grow their own vegetables in their home gardens & in many cases are fairly self sufficient. For those who live in cities or flats, the produce at the market is really high quality & is sourced locally so people still have access to good quality ingredients.’

response to climate change

whilst tim & adrienn don’t grow anything particularly exotic, they are are very keen to reduce their impact on the environment

  • reducing carbon footprint - Food miles

  • recycling - compost

There are two climate change aspects to having an allotment of us: Firstly, we were concerned at how far our food travelled to get to the supermarket. The environmental impact of shipping vegetables from Europe & Africa & in some cases the Middle East didn’t seem right to us.

We wanted our vegetables to come from Wellesbourne & this was the best way to achieve this.

Secondly, having an allotment allows us to recycle so much more. All of our food waste, & organic matter gets composted & goes back into the growing process. We even shred our cardboard delivery boxes & compost those too.

This not only helps our vegetables grow, but we are also doing our bit to take the pressure out of the recycling process too.
